What it means

Bias manifests as sample bias (who is in the data), exclusion bias (who is left out), prejudice bias (historical discrimination embedded in data), measurement bias (inconsistent data collection across groups), algorithm bias (design choices disadvantaging groups), and ML bias (bias introduced during model training).

Why it matters

Biased outputs appear normal; there is no error signal. Where AI informs hiring, lending, communications, access to services, or policing, the legal and reputational consequences fall on the organisation not the tool provider. Bias at scale is discrimination at scale.
